Hamilton Beach OpenStation 76382FJ makes the most sense when you need an electric can opener and will also use the two jar-opening grips and OpenMate multi-tool. Those accessories are manually operated. The bundle does not turn jar opening, packaging cutting and lid handling into automatic tasks.
We checked the current manufacturer page, its linked instruction booklet and Arthritis Foundation guidance on 30 September 2026. We have not opened cans, measured hand force or tested the appliance with users. The complete-task worksheet below is original purchasing analysis, not a medical suitability assessment.
Match the current bundle
Hamilton Beach’s 76382FJ product page lists automatic shutoff, a washable removable cutting lever, two jar openers, the OpenMate multi-tool and cord storage. It publishes dimensions of 9.1 inches high, 4.5 wide and 5.9 deep. Allow additional room to load a can and remove the stored tools; the appliance’s footprint is not the complete working area.
Older OpenStation model numbers appear in archived references. Our purchase route was checked against the current 76382FJ Amazon listing and its described tools. Check the selected package rather than accepting a photograph that might show a different version.
The manufacturer-linked manual, 840360000 , shows a piercing blade, geared wheel and magnetic lid holder. This is a conventional cutting workflow. Do not borrow the smooth side-cutting lid claim from a Hamilton Beach SmoothTouch appliance.
What is powered and what is manual?
The motor cuts the can after the user aligns its rim and depresses the lever. The manual says smaller cans do not need the lever held during cutting, while larger cans may require a hand to stabilize the appliance. Automatic shutoff therefore does not mean every can can be opened without supporting or positioning anything.
The jar grips, pop-top opener, bottle-opening functions and packaging blade still need hand operation. A grip can change the contact surface without removing the need to hold a jar or apply rotational effort. The packaging blade is sharp and deserves a separate handling decision.
The magnetic holder is another limit: the manual notes that aluminum lids do not adhere to it. Never treat the presence of a magnet as proof that every lid will remain attached or that a cut edge is safe to touch.
A complete-task buying worksheet
Use the intended user’s regular cans and kitchen position as the reference. If a suitable demonstration is available, observe the full task rather than only asking whether the start lever feels large enough.
| Stage | Question to answer | What the bundle does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Retrieval | Can the user reach the can and appliance? | A fixed appliance does not solve a high cupboard |
| Alignment | Can the rim be positioned at the cutter? | Electric cutting does not eliminate placement |
| Cutting | Is any stabilization manageable for the actual can? | Shutoff does not guarantee fully one-handed use |
| Lid handling | Can the lid and opened can be handled safely? | A magnet does not hold every lid material |
| Jar opening | Can the jar be supported and turned with the grip? | Included grips are not powered jar openers |
| Cleaning | Can the cutter be removed, washed and refitted? | A washable part does not wash itself |
| Storage | Are the stored accessories accessible? | Neatly nested tools may still be hard to retrieve |
The Arthritis Foundation discusses electric openers and other assistive tools as ways to make tasks easier. It does not certify this model for a particular hand condition. Individual assessment is especially useful when pain, reduced sensation or uncertain grip makes a task unsafe.
Cleaning can be the deciding movement
The linked booklet describes unplugging before cleaning, releasing the cutting assembly and washing the removable assembly, jar grips and multi-tool in hot soapy water. It specifies rinsing and thorough drying, with a damp cloth for the base. Do not immerse the powered body or assume dishwasher suitability from another opener’s instructions.
Refitting includes alignment and operating the release control. Evaluate that movement before purchasing for someone who cannot comfortably use two hands. A person may find the motor operation manageable while still needing help with maintenance.
Food residue around the cutting mechanism is part of regular ownership. The instruction booklet is the governing reference for disassembly and reassembly; this article does not replace it with a shortened operating procedure.
Are the extra tools worth paying for?
Use our original bundle budget: selected appliance cost plus only the separate tools you would genuinely need. Compare that total with an alternative opener and those same necessary tools. Exclude duplicates already in the kitchen.
For example, a hypothetical $30 bundle compared with a $25 opener plus $10 of required grips makes the bundle $5 cheaper. If you already have suitable grips and never use the multi-tool, the alternative still costs $25, so the bundle instead adds $5. These are illustrative numbers, not current prices or evidence that a particular grip is suitable.
The useful question is whether the accessories solve identifiable tasks. A drawer already full of unused opening aids is a reason to assess the movement first, not buy another larger bundle. The sitewide electric can-opener shortlist compares other documented mechanisms.
Position and support checks
Choose a level surface with enough clearance to align the intended cans. Keep the cord clear of hot surfaces and the work edge, and follow the rating label and booklet for the electrical supply. The body dimensions do not establish a universal maximum can height or weight.
Do not use the appliance on pressurized containers or cans of flammable liquids. If the cord, base or mechanism is damaged, stop using it and follow the support route. A powered tool’s convenience does not justify forcing an unsuitable container through its cutter.
Our handheld-versus-countertop guide helps with format selection. The SmoothTouch and Cuisinart comparison explains different cutting approaches; neither page changes this bundle’s manual-tool limits.
Our purchase conclusion
Shortlist 76382FJ when the can placement, cleanup and lid-handling movements work for the user and its accessories would replace tools you actually need. Choose another design if the main barrier is supporting a jar, handling a lid or refitting the cutter and this bundle does not resolve it.
